Student Course Evaluations Get An 'F'.
Student evaluations of teaching are not only unreliable, they are significantly biased against female instructors.

Question: What did you like most about this course?
Response Rate: 100.00%   (7 of 7)
1 That Linux is becoming more familiar and is moving on from the basic stages.
2 Scripting = programming = short + efficient = quality programming, not just creating lengthy scripts.
3 Working with scripts really lets you see the power of Linux, also working with Windows permissions really makes you appreciate the Linux permissions.
4 Uumm....
5 get to play with the different linux operating systems
6 There is no "help" in this course. You have to figure out everything by yourself. I question what I am paying for.. I could easily figure all of this out on google.
7 *

Question: How could the course be improved to be of benefit to future students?
Response Rate: 100.00%   (7 of 7)
1 Other than the checking scripts for the Lab being a little more smoothed out (which is a minor gripe), I would appreciate lab worksheets. I found them very useful to build the structure of the idea that the lab is attempting to make us demonstrate.
2 Direct feedback required: "it is a syntax error"; "missing exit"; "loop was not completed"; "missing the option"; "output format is wrong", etc.
3 I really liked the assignments that we were given, although I do miss those worksheets we got in the previous semester, they were very helpful.
4 make a dedicated Linux course. Separate from windows.
5 better explaination of the labs
6 Help students.

Question: What did you like most about the course professor?
Response Rate: 85.71%   (6 of 7)
1 Ian's enthusiasm and depth of knowledge, always a pleasure. I know that if I'm attempting to figure something out, I'll get pointed on the right path initially instead of just getting the answer.
2 n/a
3 Whenever I go to Ian with a good question I always get a thorough and informative answer.
4 Uuummm...
5 always in a good mood

knows his linux

6 Nothing

Question: What, if anything, could the professor do differently to be of benefit to future students?
Response Rate: 85.71%   (6 of 7)
1 Just iron out the check-scripts, they're really what can crystallize a concept knowing that things are actually working properly.
2 same as 2.
3 More worksheets! I know many people had problem with assignment 05, maybe at least for an intro to that lab having a worksheet to guide people through some basic scripts would be beneficial.
4 uuuummmm...
5 better help over email
6 Get rid of your ego.

Question: What did you like most about this course?
Response Rate: 100.00%   (10 of 10)
1 The assignments.
2 Linux Stuff
3 Scripting, learning how to create and execute our own scripts.
4 It was a Lab
5 I ejoyed scripting.
6 The hands on aspect, actually working with the OS
7 practiacl application to real world problem solving
8 I like how the assignments can be implemented in real life situatons.
9 It is helpful to have a place to work on assignments and get help where needed.
10 The help availability by the professor Ian in the Lab as well as online.

Question: How could the course be improved to be of benefit to future students?
Response Rate: 100.00%   (10 of 10)
1 Practice quizzes for every topic on blackboard with a minimum number of attempts for every student.
2 Complete checking scripts
3 There isn't much that I can tihnk of.
4 It couldn't
5 Write the checking programs BEFORE the assignments are given to students. When we work on assignments for extended periods of time and then have the marking program change two days before it's due, it is extremely frustrating.

Also, the course material should be taught and explained before the assignment is in progress. The professor should not be spending loads of time reviewing concepts from 1st semester when we should be learning new ones.

6 More interactive labs that required more co operation and actually required the use of school facilities. All of the labs in this course could be done alone, at home, through a telnet connection to the course Linux server.
7 better organizationn of lab assignment and lecture material.
8 lectures and labs could coordinate and relate
9 Some of the assignments were a little long and complicated. The fact that the marking script as often not finished until just before the deadline was also somewhat frustrating.
10 No improvements required.

Question: What did you like most about the course professor?
Response Rate: 100.00%   (10 of 10)
1 I love his enthusiasm and his lab assignments.
2 Willing to help
3 Enthusiasm, liveliness.
4 Among the best teachers I have ever had
5 He is extrememly energetic and makes learning Linux fun. His assignments have an aspect to them that makes them easier for me to visualize doing in the field.
6 Ian is a fountain of knowledge, and is happy to share it.
7 enthusiasm for the course content and genuine concern for student sucess
8 Ian is a great proffessor it too bad we did not have him as a lecture prof
9 As always, Ian is very friendly and enthusiastic about Linux, and eager to help students. It was a pleasure to attend his labs.
10 Very entertaining and helpful.

Question: What, if anything, could the professor do differently to be of benefit to future students?
Response Rate: 100.00%   (10 of 10)
1 Best professor I've ever met in terms of Teaching style, knowledge, and passion.
2 Not sure
3 Not much really.
4 More teaching of the actual course not the lab
5 Since Ian is not teaching our lectures, his assignments are very diffucult since most of the knowledge required to do the assignment hadn't been taught yet. Maybe coodinate better with the profs teaching the lectures so that the students are not scrambling as much.
6 I think Ian needs to relax his stance on helping his students. Yes the answers may be in the notes somewhere, but if a student is asking for his help, they clearly are not getting the point from the notes. Not everyone learns on their own by reading notes, and he needs to adapt his teaching style to compensate for that.
7 teach the lecture material instead of justinstructing the lab
8 coordinate with the lecture class
9 Be a little more sympathetic to students. Often when students have a question, Ian will assume that the student has not read everything before asking for help.
10 no Improvements required.
