You read Linux chapters 1, 2, and 3 using the three Reading Guides prepared for you under the Notes button on the course home page. You did nine of the Floppix labs on www.floppix.com and read some of the "Other Useful Notes" files in preparation for your first Linux test. You started to read Chapter 4. ------------------ This Week (Week 3) ------------------ 1. Finish reading Linux Chapter 4 using the Reading Guide: chapter04guide.txt (The Unix/Linux File System) 2. Complete these Floppix Labs on http://www.floppix.com/ Floppix Lab 3: logical organization of the Linux file system Floppix Lab 4: navigating the file system Floppix Lab 5: directory listings Floppix Lab 6: directory commands Floppix Lab 7: file commands 3. Under the "Notes" button on the course web page, find and read these additional notes on the file system: file_system.txt Unix/Linux File System - (the weird parts) pathnames.txt Unix/Linux Pathnames home_and_HOME.txt Directories: current, HOME, and /home links_and_inodes.html Hard links and Unix file system nodes (inodes) 4. Complete Exercise #2 for hand in (when ready). ------------------------- Practice for Exercise #2: ------------------------- Reference: Week 2: Floppix Lab 24: ftp (note - see your Linux text p.170 for how to use "anonymous" FTP) On Floppix or ACADUNIX use "anonymous" FTP to download the GNU public license file "gpl.license" from the pub/Linux/LICENSES directory on machine metalab.unc.edu. (If that server is busy with "too many connections", download the file from pub/common.use/Linux/LICENSES on machine ftp.algonquincollege.com.) The file contains 17982 characters. Put the first 100 lines of this file into a file named "top.txt". Put the last line of "top.txt" into a file named "last.txt". Rename "last.txt" to be a file with your userid with a .txt extension, e.g. "abcd0001.txt". Use anonymous FTP to upload the renamed file (your userid.txt) to the directory pub/common.use/dat2330 on machine ftp.algonquincollege.com.
