Marks: 1% Exercise Synopsis (Summary Description): Boot the Mini system. Use the urpmi command and its related friends to upgrade and update the packages on the system. Install more packages. Where to work: Work anywhere that you can install your hard drive caddy and have Knoppix booted with networking at the same time. Since you need to download 200MB of updates, you need broadband networking. Exercise Preparation: See notes and readings in: week09notes.txt, mandrake_install.txt, mandrake_config.txt. ----------------------------------------------- Exercise Details (on your Mandrake Mini System) ----------------------------------------------- Have you done all the preparation steps? If not, go back and do them. Finish your Notes Readings (see the weekly Notes files). Any questions? See me in a lab or post questions to the Discussion news group (on the top left of the Course Home Page). Most of the work will require that you become the root user using the "su" command. Your prompt will change to include a "#" character, warning you that you have elevated privilege. -------------------- mandrake_config.txt -------------------- Following the directions given in mandrake_config.txt, use urpmi and friends to upgrade and update the packages on your Mandrake mini system. Add all the packages listed under "Packages to add to the Mini system". The "shorewall" firewall package will block outgoing access from your machine to the Internet when it starts at boot time, which means that things such as ssh, mozilla, and telnet will not work. Follow the IMPORTANT NOTE at the end of mandrake_config.txt to disable shorewall until you configure it properly. In-Lab Demo #1 March 21: Demonstrate a working mozilla browser on your Mandrake mini system. Electronic Submission "packages.txt": After you have completed all the package installations in mandrake_config.txt, submit (datsubmit) a listing of the names of all the packages installed on your upgraded Mandrake system. (You will need to use scp to copy the file to the linux server.) Name the file "packages.txt". --------------------- Electronic Submission --------------------- Remember to copy your work off your Knoppix system before you shut it down! Submit the files for marking: $ datsubmit 10 packages.txt Always submit all files for marking at the same time.
