The deliverables for this exercise are to be submitted online on the Course Linux Server using the "netsubmit" method described in the exercise description, below. No paper; no email; no FTP. Late-submission date: I will accept without penalty exercises that are submitted late but before 12h00 (noon) on Monday, January 16. After that late-submission date, the exercise is worth zero marks. Exercises submitted by the *due date* will be marked online and your marks will be sent to you by email after the late-submission date. This exercise is due before the end of your Lab period. Exercise Synopsis: Marks: 1% You will use Unix commands to alter the text in one of the course notes files, perform some simple edits, and save the result. Have you done all the preparation steps? If not, go back and do them. Part I - exercise02install.txt ------ 1. Fetch a copy of the DRAFT mandriva_install.txt file from the course notes directory into your own HOME directory. 2. Read the first part of the mandriva_install.txt file and do everything up to and including the first section labelled "Identifying your hardware" (about 50-60 lines of text to read). Make the suggested edits to change hdX to the correct name. Save the changed file. 3. Review searching for items in the manual: man_page_RTFM.txt Find the Unix command name that will rename (move) a file. Rename the file to be called "exercise02install.txt". 4. Add your assignment label to the top of the file, each line preceded by "# " (same format as last week). In the Comments field, copy the output line that indicates the DMA speed of your caddy drive, e.g. # Comment: Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 5.26 seconds = 12.17 MB/sec Part II - News Groups ------- Using the Konqueror web browser, post a news article into the algonquinc.test news group. (You will need to set up your name and email address first, before you can post.) Refresh the news group to see the posted article. Read your article. Cancel the article. Now post a news article into the course discussion news group. You may post on any subject related to NET2003 and/or networking. (Off-topic postings go in other news groups, e.g. algonquinc.students.general - see the link "News How-To" on the course home page.) Please stay on the networking/Linux topic in the course news group. Feel free to post off-topic items in other news groups!
