CST 8128 — Lab 11

1. Review the sections that you prepared during the past week:
   • Section 8.1 of Chapter 8 on "Sequential Files"
   • Section 9.1 of Chapter 9 on "User-defined data types"
   • Section 9.2 of Chapter 9 on "Random-access Files"
2. Follow the example procedures in each of these sections.
3. Do several of the exercises in each section and record the ones you did in your Weekly Log Sheet.
4. You will write a quiz on this material next week.

Evaluation Tasks:

• Answer a 10-minute, open-book, offline quiz (no computer allowed) on material up to and including Chapter 7.4.
• Demonstrate your prepared solutions to all three of the following problems to your instructor:
  • 8.1: Problem 22 on p. 409 (YOB.TXT)  Ensure that your program traps errors if the file is not found.  (See p.403.)
  • 9.1: Problem 16 on p. 445 (tall buildings)  Ensure that your program traps errors if the file is not found.
  • 9.2: Problem 19 on p. 453 (COLLEGES.TXT)   You will need to modify the code for Example 1 on p.447. Ensure that your program traps errors if the file is not found.
• Do all three problems.
• Use good style (proper indentation, comments, functions and subprograms) in all your programming.
• Ensure that your program traps errors if a file being opened is not found. (See p.403.)
• Before you leave the Lab today, hand in to your instructor a Weekly Log Sheet with the following information:
1. Your name, printed legibly.
2. Your student number, also printed to be readable.
3. Today's Lab number and today's date.
4. The list of practice exercises and problems you tried while working on this section of the textbook (from the list of practice exercises and problems in the above sections).

Before next week:

Prepare yourself for next week's Lab.  You will be required to complete work on the following material:

• Section 11.1 of Chapter 11 on "List Boxes and Combo Boxes"
• Section 11.2 of Chapter 11 on "Nine Elementary Controls"

Do the examples.  Do some exercises.  Prepare your solutions to Lab 12.

Keep a written record of any problems or exercises you attempt so that you may enter this information into next week's Weekly Log Sheet.
